With the end of the holiday season we tend to find ourselves with a lot of excess! With the new year under our belt, it is good to take the opportunity to get rid of the excess items in our lives and homes!
A major place we find our clients need help is in their seasonal decor and storage. Everyone seems to have a hall closet that has become a catchall! The season changes, and items get thrown in without organization and forgotten about until next year.
Ask yourself, what would be your dream vision for a space? Begin by taking out all your items form the area. Next classify things into like objects. Do you have duplicates? Take this opportunity while everything is out to trim the excess and whittle down to what you use and like. Let go of the extras and pass along to friends, family, or a donation center. As you put things back in, make sure they’re contained in boxes or small containers together, so they are easily identifiable. The most important thing you can do here is to clearly label them! You want to be able to easily see, and know, what you have in front of you. We recommend making your space look like it would at a store. Stack your newly organized storage boxes into categories with like things.
We recently had a client who needed help with this very thing, her seasonal décor. We went to her seasonal closet and took everything out. After categorization and getting rid of duplicates, she was able to donate more than 50% of the items she had. It’s amazing how much we see that we can get rid of once we have it all together in one space. After donation, we helped her put it all back in her closet by categories and detailed labels. When her space was done, it was easy to maintain the boundary of keeping the floor space cleared because it was all so clean and organized. Just magazine perfect.
